We loved our experience meeting the dog we were hoping to adopt. The foster parents were amazing, and the puppy was beyond darling. It seemed like a done deal that we'd be able to adopt the puppy and pick him up within days. However, the experience getting approved with the Rescue was such a bummer. The criteria are not clear and it seems more based on a "gut feeling" than even a conversation on the phone. There was apparently another family looking at the puppy we were hoping to adopt, but instead of just telling us that...the person in charge of approving our family to adopt just kept coming back to us with reasons she thought we/our home was unqualified to adopt. Some things were unique to the breed (ie, not doing well with an invisible fence) that we didn't know. We offered to change our plans (move the crate from our climate controlled garage to our laundry room), spend extensive amounts of money to accomodate her thoughts (install a physical fence on our 3 acre property), etc. We were trying to find solutions, because we are caring and reasonable people. It became clear that she didn't want us to adopt this dog, but also couldn't tell us "no" based on any real objective criteria. When I finally pressed her to tell us "yes" or "no", she admitted that she'd already adopted him out to another family. It seemed like she just wanted to make us feel unqualified and uncaring--maybe then we'd leave her alone rather than her having to tell us no. Anyway, catahoulas seem to be amazing dogs, but our experience with this rescue has left such a bad taste in our mouth. I have encouraged the rescue to develop and publish more objective criteria that could have saved us a lot of heartache and frustration.
