The day I moved in to Breckenridge (one of Metro Management's apartment complexes), the AC was broken and there were stains on the bedroom carpet. I called the office and they said that nobody could come fix the air conditioning until Monday (keep in mind this was in the middle of the summer and I was under the impression that all heating and plumbing problems have to be addressed within 24 hours per Tennessee state law). As for the carpet, nobody ever came to clean it, but they said they would make a note of it so that I wouldn't be charged for it when I moved out. A pipe burst in my neighbor's apartment and they had to move out because of it. There were workers in and out for weeks, but the office never informed me that a pipe had burst in my apartment building. Then my ceiling started to leak about a month before my lease was up. I was in the basement apartment. I called the office and they sent someone out to "fix" it. I came home to a hole in my ceiling. That hole was still there the day I moved out. My neighbor told me that she had visible mold growing on her wall before she moved out. The day I moved out, my movers pointed out the mold that had grown out around the hole in the ceiling. I pointed this out to the man who came to do my inspection afterwards and we discussed all of the problems that had occurred while I was living there. Then he thanked me for doing such a great job cleaning the apartment, but I would be charged to clean the carpet. I reminded him that the carpet was stained when I moved in and he said that they had a note of that, but I still had to pay to have the carpet cleaned because everyone has to pay for carpet cleaning when they move out. I asked, if that is the case why did I move in to a dirty carpet? And he said a stained carpet is not a dirty carpet. I was stunned. Not only did no one ever fix the big hole in the ceiling, they charged me to clean a carpet that they admitted they knew was stained when I moved in.
