We were visiting Memphis for a few days when our 4 month old puppy became sick. He was running a high fever and he was 1 week post-op from a radial ulnar fracture repair (performed at a vet ortho clinic close to our home in IL). I took him to AEC Animal ER late Sunday evening, he had an infection and it was apparent the prior repair had failed since the screws in his leg were loose. I asked the ER vet if there was a good local ortho vet and they referred me to Memphis Veterinary Specialists.
I called first thing Monday morning and the surgery coordinator Jessica called me back within 30 minutes. She had arranged an appointment for us to see Dr. Stokes Tuesday and then surgery on Wednesday if we wanted to move forward. Having experienced one failed surgery a week prior, I was very apprehensive. Our case was not easy, I have a 5 lb puppy with small bones that are still developing, this was a second attempt to put in another plate/screws, and there is a limited amount of bone to work with.
Dr. Stokes was very comprehensive in her assessment of our pup's situation and what needed to be done. She explained our puppy's current anatomy, the complications faced, and her plans A, B, C, etc. depending on what she discovered during surgery. She also explained potential risks and down stream consequences of each option which is not something our prior surgeon had done. She set realistic expectations while at same time providing peace of mind.
The following day our puppy had surgery and Dr. Stokes called once he was out. Our luck finally seems to have turned as she was able to execute on her Plan A (which meant least probability for downstream issues), and she took additional steps to provide our puppy layers of stability during his recovery. We were able to pick him up later that day, post op instructions were clearly explained, and our little pup has been doing great so far. Dr. Stokes also called a few days later to check in on him.
We were very impressed with Dr. Stokes, she comes across as knowledgable, confident, caring, well prepared and a talented professional.
Price wise.....vet specialist + surgery = expensive. But comparatively speaking to other vet speciality surgeons, the pricing here was very reasonable, especially considering the quality of care received. Take it from me that when surgery is not done correctly the first time, it means more expense, inconvenience and heartache down the road.

Amazing vets. They saved a rescue dog for us and it was a tough case. Excellent vet work and reasonable for emergency care services.
