Without exaggeration, the Academy of Vocal Arts is one of the very best places to attend opera performances in the world! They are the only tuition-free post graduate opera academy, and their artists-in-residence perform really heartfelt concerts for the general public. They have all kinds of formats, from solo recitals with just a piano to full scale opera productions. Most of their concerts are held in their Helen Corning Theater located in the Rittenhouse Square area of Philadelphia, and it is fun to go to concerts there. It's an old 19th century mansion, and it's a neat place. They also hold concerts at churches and schools in and around Philadelphia. I go to every show that I can.My whole life I have regularly attended classical music and opera concerts in New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Baltimore, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Germany, London, and Vienna, Austria. What sets the A.V.A. apart from all the others is that they appreciate you are attending. Everyone remembers my name, and I get invited to receptions after the concert. The resident artists really are committed to their art. It is the same reason some people might prefer to attend a college football game instead of going to see the NFL because there is just so much more team spirit here. You can get to know the resident artists, and then when they advance in their careers, you can say you knew them before they were famous.Their ticket prices are low or even free. It's even comparable with going to the movies, but you get a live show.

The best deal in the universe for elite-talent opera, performed in a cozy venue.
