I had nothing but a heap of trouble from A Cut Above Tree Service. Miguel lied to me from the beginning. I had a giant oak tree that I wanted trimmed. He lied and convinced me that squirrels had chewed out the entire inside of the tree, just like another client’s tree and that it needed to come down. He pointed to some dead branches as proof. He went on and on and convinced me so I gave him the go-ahead to take down what turned out to be a very healthy tree, confirmed by Miguel’s workers as they took it down. I also hired him to take down two small trees, the roots of which had infiltrated my garage. However, I did not authorize or even discuss with him taking down a fourth tree, which he did without even checking with me first. I was in the house but no one knocked on the door or called me and didn’t see it until it was too late. The name “A Cut Above Tree Service†must mean that they take down an extra tree. When I understandably freaked out over losing this big shade tree, he lied again and said my husband told him it was ok to take down. I’ve known my husband for 43 years and he doesn’t lie. My husband never even spoke with Miguel about that tree until after it was taken down. I was already left with a 13’ stump, cracked driveway and sidewalk (see picture) to deal with from the big oak tree since Miguel didn’t tell me until after it was down that stump grinding is extra and said his cousin would do it for an extra $500. I had already paid him $5,190 to take down three trees. Now here was an unexpected stump to deal with. Unbelievably, I had to insist that he remove that stump since that tree wasn’t even supposed to be taken down. You would think a professional would admit a mistake and make it right but this guy does not act professionally. Then Miguel added insult on top of injury. He said and I quote, “Saturday is grinding day but it’s going to rain. I don’t want you complaining that we made a lot of mud.†Wow, that was a rude comment and he wasn’t done with insults. He told me his cousin wasn’t going to remove the stump after all. He said, “I don’t want to deal with you. You’re crazy.†Yes, those were his exact words. The man Iied and insulted a customer who protested that he cut down an extra tree. I said that was not a good way to treat a customer but he never apologized. I asked him to plant a tree to replace the shade we now no longer had. That was November. All through the winter I asked him to replace the tree. Usually he ignored me, which actually gave me time to research trees. The tree deliberately taken down was a sweet gum, which I found out grows way too slowly and I knew Miguel would not replace it with a full size tree even though he said he would. That too turned out to be another lie. I settled on a hybrid poplar, which grows into a shade tree quickly. On May 25, he actually responded to me and said the tree is in “Texas or California or somewhere around there.†Finally at the beginning of June, he put in a hybrid poplar but he put in a DWARF hybrid poplar!!! It will never grow into a shade tree. I have given up on him and will plant a full-size hybrid poplar on my own. DO NOT hire this guy; he’s such a liar that his pants should be on fire.
