Location: Okay. Testing for belts does not always happen at this location, and you may have to travel for a half-day or longer to test for the next belt level. It is inconvenient.
Dojo: Often unvacuumed dojo carpet. The carpet is thin with no underpadding. The changing rooms are small and have nothing to hold/store belongings or to hang up clothes.
Competition: This particular martial arts group competes amongst itself and never invites or attends competitions with similar disciplines. There are no MMA titleholders from the American School of Shaolin Kempo.
Training: Stretching is not explained; you'll need to research this and stretch before your training. The hour routine consists of a exercises, practicing punches/kicks, followed by katas/forms, and ending in group practice against each other. Although this discipline appears to have modified their primary karate format with a bit of jiujitsu, kungfu and defensive moves, it still involves doing a lot of wasteful, outdated moves and practices that don't directly serve self-defense. There also is a limited amount of sparring and one-on-one fighting with protective gear.
Belt transitions: White, yellow, orange, purple, blue, blue stripe, green, green stripe, brown, brown stripe, and then black belt and so on. Usually takes about 3months between belts, until one gets into the higher belt levels. Takes about 2.5 years to go from white to brown.
Tualatin Martial Arts hours of operation: The dojo doesn't appear to open before 3:00 pm, even though the door sign says differently. You won't be able to do any practicing because it appears it is only open when the instructor is teaching classes, and there is not enough room to practice while classes are being taught.
Instruction: Adequate, nothing exceptional.
