From the walk throughs at the house I just bought, I knew it looked nice for big things, but was dirty in small details. Grime in all the light switches, 20 years worth of dust on the blinds, and greasy residue on the kitchen and bathroom shelves. Since our close date was during the school year, I hired Dano’s to do all the detail cleaning before we moved in so that I could focus on unpacking and being present 100% for my students. I specifically asked for details, and said my number one thing to focus on was light switches and outlets because they were so weirdly gross. The rest of the home was pretty clean and I don’t mind doing the bigger things like cleaning the fridge or counters, floors or oven top. I needed help with all the details and expressly said I’d pay whatever it took to have it done well. Yet when we arrived, it was as though they hadn’t cleaned at all. Nothing had changed! I shuddered whenever I needed to turn on a light switch and simply couldn’t unpack anything until I’d actually cleaned the house myself. Sharon from Dano’s texted to ask how it was, and I replied that it was still pretty gross so it must have been far worse than I’d known since it’s taken them all day. She called back and told me that “clean” means something different to each person and she’s proud of her work and that she “sleeps well every night.” The end result is that I still had to pay 500 to someone who literally did not do any work in my house, and cleaning it myself meant a few weeks of being pulled away from what I’d rather be focusing on, a few chiropractor visits, and a stolen 500.
