Rude, unprofessional, and condescending among other things. The rental property is not worth the hassle of dealing with this landlord. There are other places with landlords who actually treat future tenants with dignity and respect. I’ve never been treated so terribly as a client in my entire life. Every part of you whether it be personally or financially is picked apart and judged when you meet with her and fill out your application, honestly, applying to college was less stressful than dealing with her. I suggest finding one of the many other landlords in Columbus and avoiding this “company” you give them even a cent or a minute of your time.

Another displeased tenant here! Mary, the voice of Cheplowitz Properties (I say voice because I lived on her property for a year and never saw her once), seems at first to have everything together. First impression was that she is super strict about move-in and documents, which honestly is a hopeful sign from a landlord. Thought process: runs a tight ship so maybe things will be taken care of. I’m not here to complain about our requests throughout the year. Most things, although minimal they were, were taken care of during the period of my lease. Here’s where things went wrong and why Mary gets a bad review, and probably will continue to do so by future tenants who care enough to warn others, until she stops being so greedy. And cold. I’ll second what a previous review stated, that my interactions with Mary over voicemail and e-mails were pretty off-putting. She’s just rude. People skills are important when running a business, simply put. At one point in my lease, our place was broken into and things stolen via a brick thrown into the window. I was the only one home, it was late, and my keys were locked in the apartment due to my panic. After calling the police, I called Mary to update her and ask if she could open the door for them. Her first question was “Well did you have the alarm set?” and then proceeded to ask me questions that were clearly in concern for her rental property than my safety and our belongings. End of the night, she didn’t come. Her husband called me back a half hour later apologizing, which felt pretty pointless by then. The other major problem we had was with our security deposit. We had 1/3 of our security deposit deducted for issues that definitely did not reach the amount she charged us for. This was consistent with every property we know of by her, hundreds of dollars taken out for minimal wear & tear. When I e-mailed her requesting receipts and threatening legal action, she came back at us and said she could’ve charged way more. So unprofessional, unfair, and greedy. Friendly warning, the place might be nice but the landlord and deductions from security deposit aren’t worth it.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Upon move in (after already signing the lease) I was warned by the previous tenant that I would likely regret my decision to rent from this company. Mary, the landlord was never friendly to begin with but it only got worse. The apartment was shown to potential tenants without a 24 hour notice on more than one occasion. A male maintenance worker entered our unit and the bedroom of my roommate who was undressed. Several charges were taken out of our security deposit for repairs for the toilet, even though the toilet had issues upon our arrival. Mary would call several times during the school day when she needed to be in contact with me, however never returned phone calls when I needed to get in touch with her. The office phone is almost never answered. Renting with Cheplowitz Properties was an overall miserable experience. Oh and definitely be sure not to lock yourself out of your unit, she will charge you a $60 lock out fee, even if it's your first time doing it, and still take over an hour to come let you in. There's pretty much a ridiculous fee for everything.
