We have been using TRP Sumner for our taxes for the past 5 years. They do a great job with our taxes and are always very through with their explanations when we go through our returns or if we ever have questions. As a small business owner, I like knowing that a whole team is dedicated to my account and that multiple people have their eyes on it. Beyond just the tax prep, however, we have gotten a ton of value from our work with Lisa especially. She is a great connector of people. If we mention an issue we are having be it looking for a specialized attorney, a project manager, insurance agent or another type of professional service she is bound to have at least one solid lead on a trusted professional in the area.

My husband and his ex wife had been using this firm to file their taxes for over three years. Initially, they loved Lisa. She was very quick to respond and their taxes were almost always ready before they were even ready to pay. Initially their fee was only $200. After a year or so, the price went up to $250. Last year, it was $300. And this year, when my husband and I filed, the price increased up to $450. She had also at one point in the past attempted to charge him $250 to file an additional form that she had claimed earlier in the year they didn’t need to file. After reminding her that she had told him he wouldn’t need it, she didn’t charge him for the form. Now we understand that doing the paperwork takes time and that the more complicated the paperwork, the more time it takes, hence the higher cost. But she deliberately ignored my request to not file a specific return. She told me it would be $250 to complete that paperwork and I told her I would do it myself for free since I had done it last year. Or I could have easily filed for free from an online program. She went ahead and filed the paperwork, charged me an amount for her time to file it, and I still have to fill out a form myself because I’m not getting everything I’m supposed to. I would gladly go in and argue the point but with me being deployed with limited communication and my husband in and out of the field, makes that difficult. We decided to just suck it up and pay the fee because we want our taxes filed and over with. If it was just about money, we could probably be a little more understanding but prior to December, my husband emailed and called numerous times (over the course of a couple months) to ask her a question about a form that needed to be filed and she never contacted us back. We finally stopped in and they had the form ready to be signed but never contacted us to tell us she received our messages or that the paperwork was ready. As it was, we signed the paperwork a little over a week before Christmas right before I deployed and it was sent out or filed until after the first of the year. And none of this even touches the fact that we gave Lisa our W2s in mid January and our taxes weren’t finished until 2 days before March, despite saying they would be finished almost two weeks prior. She tried to tell me it had something to do with a form I had submitted that was outdated by four years. In my effort to be thorough, I had mistakenly given her a form that she didn’t need and was not applicable. My husband bragged about how great Lisa was, how responsive and quick everything was, but that was not what we saw these past few months, sometimes it would take days, if not a week or more to hear back from her. Yet his ex wife seemed to quickly be able to get ahold of her when asking about their return from the previous year. Maybe good timing? Lisa has been promoted to Vice President and it has been tax season so we understand being busy, but part of the charm of this firm was that they were a small local office that offered personalized customer service. Seems that as they grow, they’re getting away from some of that. Our recommendation is that you look around and ask a few different CPAs and local firms before choosing McFadyen & Sumner as your tax choice.
