My father, made arrangements with Star of David memorial Chapel years ago for his funeral. First, I need to say that when someone dies, the family is left with a lot of tasks that need to happen fast and can be overwhelming. I would have assumed that a Funeral director would be someone who would be as understanding and as helpful as possible. This was not our experience.    Sadly we lost my father on March 1st. His wishes were for a military service with a Chaplain at Long Island National Cemetery where several other family members are interred. He had his own views and wishes on how his Jewish funeral service should go. This included a Military Honor Guard and a Chaplain.    Once Andrew Novak was paid he was of no help when we needed him. He told us a Rabbi would be on call if the Chaplain didn't show. We agreed with this.    He became very impatient when I called the day before the funeral to say that we still weren't sure if we could secure a Chaplain and may need the Rabbi. Suddenly the "on call" Rabbi needed to be secured immediately. I had to calm him down and ask that he please work with me and give us a bit more time to confirm the Chaplain. He could have easily made some phone calls to many Rabbis and at least tried to explain our situation to them. A heads up about any time frame to secure a Rabbi was not clearly communicated to us.    He used phrases like, "not my problem, I don't know what to tell you, these people have jobs." I would assume this is part of a Rabbis job. Andrew could have acted like he cared. It was obvious to me that he had no sympathy for grieving, physically and mentally exhausted family members. in he end we did use the Rabbi. And he was excellent as was the staff at Long Island National Cemertery.    There was also a bogus charge on the cremation cost breakdown. $150.00 gratuity. My mother asked what this was for. He said it was so the cremation was done properly. He offered to take that charge off. But since he just implied to a grieving family that my father's cremation my not be done properly if we didn't pay the $150.00 we simply dropped the matter.       I found this online when searching gratuity charges for cremation: "you do not tip the funeral director. Their fees are included in the overall funeral costs. After all, they receive a salary from the funeral home and don't rely on tips. If your funeral director did a good job, you can send a thank you note or rate them favorably online. You can also refer your friends to your funeral director."     Andrew Novak had awful manners, was visibly annoyed at fairly simple requests. He was absolutely of no help once he was paid. Plus there was a bogus charge for the cremation.
