I am a NYS Licensed Engineer retired from a 35 year career with the NYS Department of Transportation. For 20 of those years, I was responsible for the operation, maintenance and repairs of the state highway system in Cayuga and Seneca Counties. In those 20 years, I supervised several hundred miles of asphalt paving projects on the state system. I planned a project to rehabilitate my residential asphalt driveway in Tompkins County. It is not a large driveway, but it was not a simple resurfacing project. The driveway required extensive rehabilitation and reconfiguration because of a recent wall project. It also had the issue of a steep grade from the house up to the highway. I developed a work plan that included milling, excavation, regrading, hand shimming, paver placed binder course and paver placed finish course. I met with 4 area paving contractors to review the project I selected Spencer Paving Company as my contractor. Mr. Bret Smith was the company representative that met with me to discuss the project. Mr. Smith understood what I wanted done and was willing to do the necessary preparation tasks. He also offered suggestions for the driveway drainage and reconfiguration. .He has 25+ years of asphalt paving experience. More importantly, he has the necessary asphalt paving knowledge and expertise. He told me that he would personally be on site as part of the crew and supervise the project. The Spencer Paving Company was not the lowest cost proposal, but I was willing to pay extra for the quality of work they are known for. Communication with the company office staff prior to the project was smooth. The crew arrived on the scheduled day. Shortly after the work commenced, I knew I had made the correct decision in selecting the Spencer Paving Company. The crew was experienced, skilled and friendly. Work progressed in an organized and orderly method. Mr. Smith paid particular attention to shaping the driveway in front of the garage to insure good rainfall drainage. I was very satisfied with the care taken in the preparation work. The attention to detail by the crew on those tasks produced an extremely good final product. The finish course asphalt mat was tight and smooth. When he submitted his project proposal, Mr. Smith assured a high quality job that would include all the preparation tasks that I requested.
