Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School

I attented this school from 1964-1971. I don't know what years it includes now, but at the time, I was there from 2nd-8th grades. Father Doyle was our pastor at the time. He was a wonderful priest and we all loved him. I was in 4th grade, when the fire happened at the new church. We could see the smoke, because our windows were facing the church. The whole school was evacuated and sent home. I had nuns most of the years there. There were also other non nun teacher there a well. During the warmers weather, we were allowed to play outside, in front of th school before it was time to enter. The girls played hopscotch and the boys played catch. I also remember the hot lunches were pretty good and cost 30 cents, while milk cost 2 cents, and chocolate milk cost 3 cents. Some of the hot lunches consists of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy with a vegetable. Another was Hot dogs with French fries. Another was Spaghetti with bread and butter. Another was Sloppy Joes. Another was Fish sticks and potatoes. Deserts consisted of jello, cookies, cake and sometimes they had the most delicious choclate oatmeal cookies which were very delicious, everyone loved them. The teachers taught the general subjects, Math, English/Spelling, Geography, History and Religion. I had the pleasure of being the one who, in eigth grade, cleaned the chalkboards in our homeroom class and I also, was chosen to clean the room where the nuns had breakfast and lunch. It was actually an honor to be chosen to do these things, because it meant you got out of the classroom to go get water for the chalkboards and then empty it out. Also, cleaning the nuns quite large kitchen and dining room got me out of class for awhile in the morning, which was a big thing. I enjoyed my time there and reminese about it often. The only negative thing that I remember was when one of the nuns actually slapped me, hard across the face, because I had asked the girl who sat next to me a question, before I knew that she was done talking. Other than that, I have many fond memories!
