I visited Tzarevna after having read the praise it received in the New Yorker - and I can confidently say the accolades are justified. Like many, I had little knowledge of russian-inspired cuisine. To me, Chef Ricky Dolinsky and wife Mariia have ultimately created an unpretentious atmosphere to promote culinary education. I enjoyed a Georgian wine tasting along with soviet comfort food, and I will do so again. I thoroughly recommend the khachapuri and the namesake dumplings. There is much to learn about one of the least explored cuisines in NYC - Tzarevna delivers a master class.

It's an OK place, as an Eastern European, I would say it's quite far from homemade quality. The pickled vegetables were nice, vareniki with potatoes were ok, and that swill they call borscht, definitely stay away. Try the compote that was quite close to what we make at home. Service leaves room for improvement. The waitress kept coming back and confirming what we have ordered. Then messed up the coffee order. The food took a long time to come, but the check showed up in seconds. I won't be coming back.

Was here on a Friday night to catch up w a girlfriend. Indoor dining. Very warm and welcoming. We stayed there chatting for at least three hours and they were super nice about it. Would recommend the beef stroganoff - melt in your mouth wagyu beef and mashed potato. Also the honey cake. Will return again soon.
