image The best pottery studio in NYC!
I joined their beginner course first. The studio is quite welcoming of people from all backgrounds and experience levels. I enjoyed the classes so much, I ended up enrolling in the advanced course as well (I come all the way from south Brooklyn on weekends, so that should say a lot).
Grace has been my instructor in both these courses and she is absolutely AMAZING! She explains every single thing in such detail and always encourages us to ask questions. The classes are enjoyable, never ever rushed, and comprehensive. Not only during classes, but she is always available to guide and answer questions even during workshop hours. Also the entire staff at the studio is super kind and helpful! 10/10

image Ive been going to The Potters Wheel since 2011. It was an amazing collective of friendly artists who helped each other out, and I felt at home. It went sharply downhill during the COVID-19 pandemic- the new business manager Chris Owens was hired and overturned the entire community. After Mr. Owens was hired, I started hearing numerous complaints about how rude and controlling he was, but I still decided to take classes. Even though the change in management and policy was jarring, I enjoyed practicing pottery enough to put up with feeling significantly less welcome there. Most of the veteran potters left in favor of other studios, and the once amazing supportive studio environment became bleak and impersonal. I hoped I wouldnt have to deal with any trouble with Mr. Owens, but alas, I hoped in vain. I recently came into the studio to do some glazing, forgetting that the last session already ended. Both the owner and her business manager Owens were there, but they didnt told me I couldnt be there until about 35 minutes into my work. I apologized and stated that Id leave as soon as I could, and I did. The next day I received an invoice for $15(which is the price of studio time for 3 hours), for that time that I was there. I planned to speak to the owner the next time I was at the studio, because I shouldnt have been charged for 3 hours when I was only there for 35-45 minutes. The night before the Thursday I was supposed to come to the first class of my next session, I received a refund for the course, and an incredibly unpleasant email from the business manager Chris Owens, telling me that I was refunded for the course due to my failure to pay the invoice in time. I was also informed that I had 1.5 days to clear my shelf, or else my unfinished pieces would be thrown out. I was also told not to come back to the Potters Wheel again. I came on Thursday, took everything off my shelf, and asked the owner why it was necessary to act in such an unprofessional manner with someone who has been there for 10+ years, when she could have simply reminded me of the invoice in person that Thursday. She told me that a lot is going on every day. Artists, if youre looking for a reliable studio with reasonably competent staff that you can potentially come back to for years, the Potters Wheel is not for you.

Hi Becky,We apologize for this late response, we've been extremely busy with keeping the studio humming along for all of our new & returning students. To this day, we're still confused as to why you ultimately chose this route to take, when all we had asked is for you to pay for services you utilized. You didn’t reach out to us to discuss your thoughts or concerns at any point. It's unfortunate you feel the way you do, and honestly we're not sure why you do. That you took the time to write such a long & hurtful review took us both, as well as our students, by complete surprise. As stated, you had been coming to the studio for many years, so you had to be somewhat aware of the financial struggles the studio faced prior to summer 2017, when Grace & I began to find & fix several studio issues. One issue we found was that some students would just not pay for the services we provided. We began a no tolerance policy on non-payment. The fact that we even had to is, to this day, just ridiculous. We ask that you & every student pay the fees owed...fees you were aware of when we spoke in person on the day in question. We sent numerous emails to you after speaking in person regarding this matter that, via our read receipts, we know that were opened. Accordingly, the day you and I spoke in person, you came in unannounced during non class/workshop hours. The 7pm workshop was sold out, so I asked if you could wrap up before 7pm so that our already paid & scheduled students had their rightful space, which you said yes to. You then also asked if you needed to pay, and I responded yes. I tried to get your attention as you were walking out, but couldn't, so an invoice we sent for the workshop fees within 10 minutes of you leaving, and you opened that invoice the next day in the late afternoon. More emails were sent over the next few days, but with no response, so we assumed you were just choosing not to pay.. When we finally heard back, you stated that you had "phone problems", which is something we definitely all deal with. However, our email read receipts indicate that you did see these invoice emails. Accordingly, the ban we had to put in place was for that session only, not sure why you are saying it was permanent. That's either a misrepresentation or speaks to your continued ignoring of our correspondence.Grace asks all students to schedule their time at the studio so that she doesn't have to worry if they have paid or not. I can’t speak to how long you were there, but our workshop fees are a flat rate of $15 per 3 hour block. It is expected that students are aware of that when they sign up. It clearly states that on our website. Workshop time is scheduled at specific times so that Grace & our teachers have time to prepare & clean up for each class. You came in during a time when no student should've been there & did not pay up on arrival or departure. When someone shows up unannounced & then ignores repeated attempts to collect payment, it can't be a surprise that measures are taken to protect the studio from that type of behavior. Regarding those "veteran potters" you referenced, it is always sad to see customers leave, but that small group of students left because they either realized they could no longer take advantage of an overworked studio owner or left because their negative behavior was no longer tolerated in the new environment we were trying to cultivate. You know as well as anyone that Grace does so much at the studio while she's there. She is the literal life blood of the studio. Personally, I have taken years to help her get the studio to a place that is not only stable, but also viable for her to use as a source of income. It's deeply saddening to have read this review filled with falsehoods. That you would misrepresent the scenario of events and call out Grace by name (and potentially harm the viability of her business) is very unfortunate. She has always been kind to you & your family/friends who joined us.
