Nice place to learn how to make pottery

The best pottery studio in NYC!
I joined their beginner course first. The studio is quite welcoming of people from all backgrounds and experience levels. I enjoyed the classes so much, I ended up enrolling in the advanced course as well (I come all the way from south Brooklyn on weekends, so that should say a lot).
Grace has been my instructor in both these courses and she is absolutely AMAZING! She explains every single thing in such detail and always encourages us to ask questions. The classes are enjoyable, never ever rushed, and comprehensive. Not only during classes, but she is always available to guide and answer questions even during workshop hours. Also the entire staff at the studio is super kind and helpful! 10/10

Ive been going to The Potters Wheel since 2011. It was an amazing collective of friendly artists who helped each other out, and I felt at home. It went sharply downhill during the COVID-19 pandemic- the new business manager Chris Owens was hired and overturned the entire community. After Mr. Owens was hired, I started hearing numerous complaints about how rude and controlling he was, but I still decided to take classes. Even though the change in management and policy was jarring, I enjoyed practicing pottery enough to put up with feeling significantly less welcome there. Most of the veteran potters left in favor of other studios, and the once amazing supportive studio environment became bleak and impersonal. I hoped I wouldnt have to deal with any trouble with Mr. Owens, but alas, I hoped in vain. I recently came into the studio to do some glazing, forgetting that the last session already ended. Both the owner and her business manager Owens were there, but they didnt told me I couldnt be there until about 35 minutes into my work. I apologized and stated that Id leave as soon as I could, and I did. The next day I received an invoice for $15(which is the price of studio time for 3 hours), for that time that I was there. I planned to speak to the owner the next time I was at the studio, because I shouldnt have been charged for 3 hours when I was only there for 35-45 minutes. The night before the Thursday I was supposed to come to the first class of my next session, I received a refund for the course, and an incredibly unpleasant email from the business manager Chris Owens, telling me that I was refunded for the course due to my failure to pay the invoice in time. I was also informed that I had 1.5 days to clear my shelf, or else my unfinished pieces would be thrown out. I was also told not to come back to the Potters Wheel again. I came on Thursday, took everything off my shelf, and asked the owner why it was necessary to act in such an unprofessional manner with someone who has been there for 10+ years, when she could have simply reminded me of the invoice in person that Thursday. She told me that a lot is going on every day. Artists, if youre looking for a reliable studio with reasonably competent staff that you can potentially come back to for years, the Potters Wheel is not for you.
