A week before I moved to NYC, I paid $300 dollars to this firm as a deposit for an apartment. When I arrived in NYC, they told me that the $300 wasn’t actually a deposit, but was a fee that would stop them from advertising the apartment. They said that someone they had already shown the place to returned to purchase the location.
There’s nothing like moving to a new city, finding yourself homeless, and having to hastily find another apartment in the weekend before you start a new job.
