image Mike rebuilt a cabin for me in Wells, NY. Some of the issues we have beg the question is he bad at his craft or does he hate me.
Problems:
1. He built the ceiling/loft floor with wet sappy fresh cut pine that still had the bark on it. This has attracted the local pine boring beetles. The infestation is so bad it sounds like it is raining as they are chewing through the wood. In fact, if you wanted to attract these beetles, do what Mike did. The boards have dried, causing them to shrink and warp. I will be replacing the ceiling/floor.
2. He installed wooden front steps that sat down into the dirt. When we moved in there were ants swarming up the steps into the cabin. Mike looked at it and said we should hire an exterminator. I replaced them with stone steps and the ants stopped.
3. Mike stated the exterior log finish should be good for 10 years. In less than 3 years I need to refinish it. Mike said the problem with the new low VOC stains is they feel tacky after application. If he read the label, this is a problem when incorrectly applied. I asked him to come refinish it and he said it is what it is.
4. The wooden support post for the loft overhang goes down to the back porch. When it rains, water pools around the post. I placed blocks around it to keep the water from rotting the wood until I can make a long term fix.
5. The wooden center support beam under the cabin was set down into the mud. I placed a stone under it.
6. Mike told me the cabin was finished and it was a completed shell, sealed from the outside. When standing in the loft overhang, you could look down to the outside. During the planning phase, Mike showed me the insulation he had that would go under the overhang. He never installed it.
7. The outside chinking is cracked in places because he never installed backer rod. My wife did the interior chinking. She never did this before; but I challenge anyone to come look at the quality difference between her armature job and his sloppy professional work.
8. The roofing job was good except that part where water seeps down around the fireplace when it rains.
9. He placed a rotted cherry log down for the mantle. Why? It would have been better to just leave it alone.
10. It took me days to clean up the construction waste piled up around the yard. He cut out part of the deck from the old cabin and left it right where it fell.
11. He installed used windows to save us money. A craftsman that cared about his work would have at least cleaned the cob webs off.
12. Mike and I walked around the cabin near the end of the project and we looked at some rotted trim that was still in place from the old cabin. He stated he would be replacing that. He never did.
If you are silly enough to consider using this company, please ask Mike to bring you up to my cabin and I will show you all the things I had, and still have, to fix.
Good Points:
1. The main cabin floor is solid.
2. The roofing job was good.
3. The logs are well placed and locked in.
4. The stairs to the loft are good.
5. The general design he came up with was good.

Best Of Me Best Of Me on Google

image The first line on their Web page (under About) says this:
"Born out of a proud family tradition of reliable service"
You would think this would be a company that values your time and theirs. I waited all day for Michael to come and check out a large job for an old home. He was cordial. Michael said he would do the numbers and have his wife send me the quote. I haven't heard a thing! I called twice and left both phone and email messages. I would expect that if his dad taught him about service, he would follow through. If he doesn't want to do the job, or doesn't think he can do the work I need done, then just say so. But no, I don't even get the common courtesy of even a phone call or email. Nothing! So much for service from this company. Skip to the next.
