Our visit to the Thunderbird Lake Tahoe was probably a little different than most. My wife and I took our four kids on a five mile kayak trip when the weather unexpectedly turned on us. We were passing by the Thunderbird trying to hug the shore as the wind picked up and a storm that was distant a few minutes prior, overtook us. My eight-year-old had to ditch his kayak and get on my wife's, and my six-year-old began to get cold and scared, crying as waves lapped over our raft. This area has little beach and is mostly a rocky shoreline. I was unsuccessfully looking for a place to safely pull them out of the water and wait it out when I saw Bill Watson and Shireen Piramoon running along the shore, with a loudspeaker, directing us to pull into their sheltered boat harbor. They had seen us in distress and dropped what they were doing to help us. They didn't just give us somewhere safe to pull out, they took us in, like family; drying off my kids, giving them drinks, snacks, a jacket for one, a shirt for another, helping carry our stuff up and facilitating a ride to our truck. I can't say enough or express enough gratitude. Simply great humans at an incredible place. I have now spent the evening reading about the Thunderbird and hope, plan, to return in a more coordinated and planned visit in the future.

This place was amazing. Kind of like a miniature Hearst Castle on Lake Tahoe.

Careful there's a beehive of kooks. This beach is sick but the people it brings will literally sit in your lap to get a spot. Covid 19 what's that?? This beach will show you humanity in a nutshell.
