image I love Prairie Moon Nursery! Over the course of a few years, I have ordered 4 (I.think) Butterfly and Hummingbird Gardens. Every time I have been very satisfied with the size and health of the plants. I love their catalogs and have gotten a wealth of information from them. I just Winter Sowed some seeds that I purchased from Prairie Moon and am looking forward to seeing how successful that will be. Prairie Moon is helping me to enjoy my new passion- native gardening!

image I purchased over $300 of seeds last fall, and had mediocre germination from them, 25% or so. The seed I got elsewhere and planted adjacent thrived and cover all that part of my hillside. Prairie Moon, after 3 emails and photos could not explain the relative difference in success rate, but assured me it was not their fault, or apparently their concern. They offered me a 20% discount if I wanted to try again and send them another $300. I bought my 2021 seeds from American Meadows where they have a success guarantee. Never again.

image I received a Prairie Moon catalog yesterday. I live near the coast, in northern California. The plants in this catalog are not native here. If I planted them, I'd be planting nonnatives that are potentially invasive or already proven to be.
Nowhere in this catalog does it say that a native plant is one growing where it occurs naturally, where it has evolved alongside the other plants and animals of a place and where it benefits them.
This nursery damages efforts to restore genuinely native habitat--unless that habitat is midwestern prairie. It is engaging in dishonest marketing. Well-meaning gardeners trying to do the right thing but who are not well informed could easily choose these plants and think they're helping local insects and animals, when they are not at all. For example, the milkweed species in this catalog are not native here, except for showy leaf; western monarch populations are struggling because people keep planting non-native milkweed, which interferes with their migratory cycles and is causing sickness and further decline.

image Just had my second contact with Prairie Moon about $80 worth of wild flowers and grass. Planted in April after last frost and have waited, and waited and waited, but no germination at all. Not one flower has come up and its September. Prairie Moon says that it may take 3~5 years. I have never ever had anyone tell me that and I'm 66 years old. Want my money back, but they say wait 5~6 years. Nope.....want my money now.
