40ish years of our group heading north (my dad started going before I was born) and this was easily the worst experience we've ever had. To be honest, we've never really had a bad experience...until our trip to Grand Vu. The owner is combative, not flexible in the slightest (something you VERY much need from a lodge owner during a fishing trip because things always go wrong) and, arguably, unethical. He rented us an unusable boat (no trolling motor on Leech Lake? Good luck!). Admittedly, he never said it had a trolling motor, but as one of our group pointed out, were we supposed to ask if it had a steering wheel as well? When you're renting a boat for $1200 a week, and it's got a 140hp on it, I think a trolling motor is a reasonable expectation. We finally called the police to try to settle the issue, as he wouldn't refund a cent despite our group not using the boat other than the first day. We ended up leaving two nights early because we did NOT feel we/our equipment was safe and our friends got charged for two boats (one from Acorn Hill Resort - very nice ownership) and one from Jeff. The one from Jeff didn't leave the slip all week. Other issues? Plumbing is bad (plunger after every use!), power went out while people were trying to fry fish, the people that are actually onsite working don't have any power to answer any questions (the dock guy told us a refund wouldn't be an issue!), lots of bugs in cabins (to be fair, this is part of the northern experience), ice isn't free ($5 a bag!), no one is available until 8am to assist with anything (I mean, it's a fishing camp!), 4% credit card fee, lake maps will cost ya, the list is long. From the others we talked to in camp, and from the reviews you'll find on Google/Yelp/Facebook, we are not in the minority at all. If I were planning a trip to the area again, I'd explore some of the smaller lakes and look to portage daily. We found great fishing and nicer people on Tenmile Lake.
