This place might do great work, I wouldnt know. I called to request a quote. Im having a pool put in this summer, independent of my house. She told me that they will not come give me a quote until the pool is completed. I currently have a deck, but want something that will transition from the house to the pool better than what I have. She refused. She claims that they give their quotes down to the dollar and that if something changed with the pool, that quote would no longer be valid. I explained that I understand how quotes work. I also mentioned that that is what change orders are for, to which she replied something about having the quoted material already decided and something something, its our policy. I really truly cant understand why they wouldnt want my business. This isnt an above ground pool that I want wrapped in a deck, Im putting $100K+ in ground pool in my backyard, and I want ideas on what can be done to improve the current deck that I have, or a quote on a new deck, in the existing footprint of my old deck, that flows TO what will be my new pool. I understand that you have your policy, business must be pretty good to be refusing to provide quotes to people looking to spend money.
Edit: I agree wholeheartedly that nobody wants a $5000 surprise. I also agree that a change order should be an exception and not an expectation. What I dont agree with is that a company is unable to provide a quote for a deck just because a pool project that is separate from the deck, isnt complete. As I assume you would be able to understand, there are a lot of expenses when completely remaking your backyard. On top of the pool and apron, theres landscaping, irrigation, sound system, to name a few things. If you are unwilling to provide a quote, how can anyone budget properly for their project? As I said, I get that you have a policy; in my opinion its a poor one. Its not as if Im asking you to design a deck for a house that is not built. My pool design is done. My apron is planned. I have a deck on my 8 year old house that I do not care for. Now that there is a pool going in, I want some ideas on 1) a way to reskin or spruce up what I currently have to make it better for the backyard I am trying to create, or 2) a redesign to make it flow better from my house to where the pool is going. On top of all of this, a quote now, with a solid plan, could only make this project better. If you came out and looked at it and said, maybe your stairs should come down here, and gave me a design that I hadnt thought of, there would actually still be time to have the pool contractor change my apron to accommodate the better deck design. Hes actually said I can change my apron as much as I want, up to about a week before they start excavation. But if you wait until the pool and apron are complete, there is no way to do that and there will be fewer options for the deck. But hey, sounds like you have plenty of business as it is. Being so close minded about this, I dont think you would be right for my project anyway. Best of luck.

All contacts from start to finish were polite and professional. All our questions were answered in a timely manner. I had a couple issues with the stair treads and they were fixed the next monday. The entire crew should be commended on their hard work and professionalism working in the harsh weather conditions. My wife and i are completely satisfied with our new deck. Best experience with a contractor I have had. From start to finish, every employee I encountered at Green Shield was personable, knowledgeable, and transparent. They tore down my old deck in 2.5 hours, and built the new one in five days, just in time for spring. I would highly recommend using them if you are looking for a professional deck builder with top-tier product and timely execution.
