Don and April are very gracious hosts and keep their Victorian style home immaculate. They know the area well and it was a pleasure to stay with them again.

The building is really beautiful. I had decided it wasn't a place I'd return to the first night, but I wasn't bad enough for me to write a bad review; it just had oddities: a tub but no shower (and no curtain), forty-five minutes of Q&A with the owners before I could go to my room, doors that don't lock when you leave. But it was nothing I couldn't cope with. The next morning at breakfast, the owner insisted on praying over me before I ate. Uncomfortable, as I'm not Christian, but whatever. Later, though, I mentioned owning a condo in St. Louis, and he told me that he'd never liked St. Louis as a truck driver because "it always seemed a little dark to me. You know, run down." I hoped he didn't mean that in a racist way, but he did. I spent the next twenty minutes trying to find common ground with this man, but he just kept saying "I'm not racial or anything" followed by something really offensive about "blacks." He's not keeping a KKK hood in his closet or anything, but he definitely believes black neighborhoods suffer specifically because black people live there and that black children aren't successful because their parents don't want the same things for them that white parents do. It was so upsetting (and I'm white) that I went up, packed my bag, and checked out a night early (yes, they charged me for both nights). While I was doing so, of course, his wife insisted that he "didn't mean it that way" because they have two black grandchildren who are doing well in school. If you're white and Christian and nothing I've said above bothers you, this may be the perfect property for you. But if you're not white and/or not Christian, please stay at the Holiday Inn or pick a BNB in another town. Please. At best, you will be uncomfortable here, and I don't want that for anyone.
