Joe and his team at Hileman are top notch. I've worked with them several times and could not be more pleased. As an interior designer, it's invaluable to have builders we trust and Joe is at the top of our list.

Joe's team has done good work for us in the past, but our recent experience with home repairs was a nightmare! We had his team out to open two walls. This was discussed extensively beforehand with Joe coming out to our house to take measurements, etc. The plan was to open a wall between the master bedroom and the room nextdoor with a 6 foot opening so that we could install 2 sliding barn doors and either have the room open or closed as it was to be our daughter's nursery. It started with his team opening the entire wall... not 6 feet so we couldn't install barn doors. This made it exceptionally more difficult for us when our daughter was stillborn and we cannot close doors to avoid the nursery if we needed to. The other wall was a main load bearing wall on the main floor. Ever since opening the wall we have experienced nothing but trouble. They took out our intercom system to open the wall, but when they replaced the main station it won't work now. So no intercom in our house. They didn't move the return air vent in my son's room appropriately so in the summer the hot air can't escape and the cool air had trouble getting into it. We contacted Joe on SEVERAL occasions via email, text, phone and he never fixed the problem. Now our 2nd floor doorways have shifted indicating there is likely a structural problem so we have to pay to have someone come inspect it. Unfortunately there was no permit pulled - something we assumed he would do as the contractor - so it wasn't inspected by anyone that we know of or have record of. His team came to work during 90 degree weather and left our front door open despite us telling them to keep it closed. Maybe it was the language barrier, but if you don't have an English speaking crew then someone needs to be on site at all times who can translate! This difficulty communicating lead to two problems. First the bees in our house which I have anaphylaxis to. We told the workers to keep the door closed, they smiled and nodded in agreement, but when we came back they had it open again. Aside from the bees it made our house 90 degrees and despite turning off the a/c unit while the door was open it caused extensive damage to the air conditioner/HVAC system to cool the house back down afterwards. We have had one repair after another on the furnace after they moved the return air lines and electrical troubles after they moved some switches. All of these things could have been addressed had Hileman construction simply returned our calls, texts, or emails. As a business owner myself I don't like when folks go online to say something negative without giving the business owner a call or contacting them in some way. But after months of no response here I am to hopefully warn the next person who uses this company for their home or business. Don't use this company unless you plan on spending all of your time just trying to get in touch with them, remind them of things, ask them the timeline, etc. It is a full time job just doing that!

I have used the Heilman Company on a number of minor and major remodeling projects. Moreover, I first met Joe Heilman at a charity event to rebuild the home of elderly gentlemen by the name of Mr. Doyle who had been scheduled to be evicted and his home raised. Joe, along with a host of others contributed time and material to this project. When I look for contractors, I like to look for those that give back and Heilman has a history of this. I completed a major remodeling of a rental property with Heilman in 2016 in which time, and of course money, were integral parts. We had only 90 days to complete this remodel and I was pleased that the project came in 'On Time' and 'On Budget'. I do not look to my contractors for the best price, though that is a factor. I want a fair price but the job needs to be quality work and completed on time. I should note that I always use an architect to design the project and do bid specifications. Not doing so is a recipe for delay, cost increases and is simply unfair to the contractor. I would highly recommend Heilman for future construction projects and I plan on using them again in the near future. I would be happy to speak to anyone regarding my experiences. Simply ask Heilman for my contact information (sorry I do not post it)

We used Hileman Construction to completely renovate an old house we bought in Ann Arbor Hills. We received bids from several contractors but Joe Hileman's proposal was the only one that was reasonable. Joe was flexible to work with our architects and a few sub-contractors we selected. Joe's team started the 7-month project despite the harsh winter and completed the project on time and on budget. Joe's team and the sub-contractors selected were very professional and did high quality work. Joe was always available during the project to answer questions and to find the best solutions to issues that were not discovered until the demolition was done. Joe also provided great sub-contractors, such as the local cabinet maker, electrical, and A/C. We highly recommend Hileman contruction.
