Is this place actually open still? I called for takeout a couple of times but all I get is a voicemail saying they'll be open July 27th. (It's August 6th now). I stopped by and there's a sign on the door saying closed, will open July 27th.

New Mother India has the capability to serve the best conventional American-style Punjabi cuisine in New England. Unfortunately, the quality you get on any given day is rather variable. However, even their average is superior to the vast majority of Indian restaurants in the region. At its best, the heavy-cream-based sauces such as the CTM and the Korma can be sublime. As is typical for regional Indian restaurants, the service is spotty. The waiters and staff try, but they just don't quite understand the conventional rules of service. They are also sometimes a bit understaffed, so during busy hours you may have to wait a little too long for service. However, they don't show the meanness, insolence, or the uncaring attitude you sometimes see in bad restaurants, and the owner is always cheerful and pleasant to deal with. Those qualifications aside, NMI is still my first choice for Indian food in New England.

Proceeded the head there earlier this week with my wife for some Indian buffet lunch. Having been to nearly every other place on Moody Street, this was one of the few spots we had yet to check out. The ratings on Yelp were mixed but it seemed like the general consensus was that we'd have a decent experience. I also called, ahead of time, to make sure that they had the buffet available to patrons for lunch as it was Christmas week and they confirmed that they did so off we went. We arrived to a spacious entryway with a very large hostess counter and a display of their beers and craft beers. But no one was to be found. We did peer into the dining room and saw a dozen or so people eating and one somewhat busy staff member. We stood by the entrance for a good 6-8 minutes and were never acknowledged. It wasn't until we made our way into the dining room area and then stood for another 5 minutes that the guy finally made eye contact with us and sat us. Honestly, we thought about walking out. It had almost been 15 minutes since we had entered. The place wasn't all that busy. I don't understand. The decor of the place is very particular and eclectic to say the least. In the buffet area, which is divided by a few glass walls are tons of Red Sox and Celtics pictures but the rest of the dining area has Indian art. It's very weird to say the least. It's not very cozy in there but it works, I guess. We shrugged everything off still hoping for a good experience and walked right up to the buffet - what we found was very underwhelming to say the least. Half of the trays were empty and the rest that was available had been sitting there, nearly empty, all dried up and barely warm. I almost thought about pulling out of there and going somewhere else but for some reason, being stubborn is one of my traits and I was determined to eat there. I proceeded to try just about everything that was left. One item stood above the rest. Their braised eggplant dish was good. The rice was bland, the chicken tikka masala was very dry and the tandoor chicken was cold and dry as well. They were out of pakoras and there was no one in sight to notify. The only staff member there was literally the world's worst waiter. He walked by our table for 30+ minutes never making eye contact with us and completely ignoring us. The only thing he did do is bring us a bottle of water. That's it. He never once asked us if we wanted something else to drink or some naan. They actually missed out on upselling us on stuff since we actually did want naan and a soda but had no one to order it from. We left paying $22 total and stiffing the so-called 'waiter'. It's kind of a shame because the place does have some potential. The decor isn't terrible, they have plenty of space and the buffet could be awesome. But the carelessness is evident. They've given up and don't care. No smiles, no attentiveness, no nothing. Might as well be self-serve. The frustration on other patrons' faces was visible as well. Only one table did get a decent amount of attention and that was a table of 8 people who ordered a lot of wine - shocker. The most frustrating part? Seeing that waiter walk by the buffet a dozen times without peering in to see if everything is okay and that items need refilling. C'mon dude, do your job, it's not that hard.
