Just five stars are inadequate to rate our visit to Chawton House today. Bright sunshine to enjoy the gardens, and few visitors meant we could tour the house on our own. Lots of information puts the house and family into perspective against Jane Austen and local history. Combined with the village architecture, it's like walking back into her books. All aided by friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended.

Former residence of Jane Austen's brother. Well maintained house with a great exhibition detailing the achievements of famous women. Lovely tea room and gardens and a church to see as well.

We were able to buy tickets on the day- not too crowded, the guide-an ancestor/owner of the house gave us a warm welcome and an introduction to the house! Covid 'one way' system could have been clearer but it wasn't crowded so didn't matter that we kept doubling back on ourselves. The food from the tea rooms was delicious, served in the old kitchens. A fascinating and enriching day.
