Quite an experience and an amazing place. The staff couldn't be more helpful or knowledgeable. A very Maine place. Something out of the 19th century with all the spices of wood you could desire. For the professional or the serious armature.

I bought about $150 worth of American Red Oak. After I milled it, all of the wood had a lot of sap wood in it, checks, dry rot and gray staining in the sap wood. None of this wood was cabinet grade or usable. I spoke with Bob Putnam (owner) and he told me that he would take the wood back only if I returned it. This is a 2+ Hour drive one way. He told me it to ship it freight but the shipping cost would be prohibitive. He therefore refused to refund me any money for this pallet grade wood. My advice, be very careful trusting this company and buying lumber from them. I do not consider Rare Woods to be a reputable company. How hard is it to buy good Red Oak? I expected clean usable wood and was very disappointed at the quality of the wood or service I received.

I cannot speak highly enough about this hidden gem. I believe they carry about 150 species of exotic woods sourced from all over the globe. From small turning blanks to large live edge slabs, they have it all. The African mahogany we bought mills beautifully and I cannot wait to return.
