My mom bought a small pocket size Nikon from Lakeside Camera for about $180. It was 2 months old and the lense got stuck open. She took it back to them they told her it would cost $20 to ship back to Nikon to fix. Then, they assured her it would cost $150 to fix as they see this happen a lot with Nikon cameras like hers. They suggested she just buy a new camera.
I did a little research online and then called Nikon myself. They said we could send it to them by U.S. Mail if we wanted and it would cost less. And since it was under warranty unless they could see by looking at it that it had been mishandled or something they would replace it for free. If not, they would give her a quote and if she refused the quote they would ship it back to her for free.
She just called me. She got her camera back fully repaired and it cost her $5 to ship it to Nikon and that was it!
So it seems Lakeside Camera was just trying to sell her a new camera or rip her off by handling the send back for her.
Poor business ethics.
