Worst waitress EVER. Went there 5/18//12 about 9:30.. big mistake. Rudest waitress since I have been eating (she had no nametag, glasses, in her 50's probably)! This place has went WAY down hill. Won't be back. She never gave her name, now we know why.

Waitress had blood on her hands from cuts and I left. Other times before that the food was luke warm and overly greasy. Avoid this place like the plauge...as I think that waitress had it...

(This is the second in a loosely-connected exploration of the remaining Kings-X family of restaurants. I started with Jimmie's Diner and will conclude with Toc's Coffeehouse.) For as much as Jimmie's Diner is a fake look at what eating establishments looked like in the 1950s, the only remaining restaurant to retain the Kings-X name is a real look at what eating establishments looked like in the 1970s. Sadly, the waiters weren't dressed in wide-collared shirts and platform shoes. I originally thought that separating Jimmie's Diner from the Kings-X name implied that its menu was significantly different, too, but turns out it's very much the same, minus the emphasis on milkshakes. Also, whereas Jimmies had a breakfast platter the claim has been "famous for 23 years," Kings-X had a waffle that had been "famous for over 60 years." Being so similar, I went with another burger, though the name of it has since escaped me. It was 1/4 lb, as are most of the burgers on the menu, actually, and it was topped with provolone cheese, grilled onions, and bacon. The smaller patty was less juicy than my burger at Jimmie's, and the onions weren't cooked as well, either, and given that this was a pretty funky onion, it could have used it. The bacon was there, though I wonder if it was placed on the burger in the shape of an "x" to purposefully invoke thoughts of the name. I don't typically like tater (tots) gems as a side, because you can't really make them fresh, leaving the crispy crunch of those little potato pillows their only virtue. But I already tried the chips, and the fries didn't look freshly-made, so I go the (tots) gems anyway. They were about as perfect as it gets, though I would have hoped over the span of 70 years someone would have learned how to use the fryer. I visited at lunchtime on a Tuesday, and the place was once again fairly busy with older folks, which serves as another testament to either the consistency of the food or the familiarity with the brand. It should be mentioned that both Jimmie's and Kings have a pretty big military discount - 25% with a military ID, and a surprising 50% if you come in uniform (I saw this at Kings, but I don't know if Jimmie's offers the same thing). It's clear that the change in name for Jimmie's Diner was as much for distancing people from the Kings-X brand as it was the 50's theme. Though there's only one restaurant actually named "Kings-X" remaining in the city, though (to paraphrase Led Zeppelin) the menu remains the same, and in more than just these two restaurants...
