Smudde Family Dentistry

My husband and I transferred to Smudde Family Dentistry in January 2023 when our dentist of many years retired. We immediately thought of Smudde Family Dentistry because we had gone there when our kids were little 25 years ago. Although the staff was good we were encouraged to do every X-ray and testing they told us our new insurance covered and was needed to get us set up there. However the next day we were notified our insurance did not cover any of it and we owed over $500 and hadn't even had a cleaning appointmentyet! We chalked this up to a learning curve for us because that was our first provider using our new insurance. When we got the bill we reviewd my husband and I's charges promptly paid it. We received another statement the next month showing a $30 credit on our account. Contacted the office to ask about this credit and they mailed us a statement clearing the credit up to pay $30 of charges for our three children who are all married and grown paying their own bills and do not go to this dentist two of them actually live out of town. When I called to find out about these mystery charges that weren't listed on our statement until we called to ask about the credit, I was told that they were "archived charges" from when our kids were little and we went to that office when Dr Gray's father had the dental practice at the time. When I called the office to ask for a refund of these charges that were over 20 years old and we were not told were included in our original bill, the office manager was very confrontational about it and stated we owed them anyway and there would be no refund. I have since checked with an attorney and you cannot be charged for the services over 20 years later! Since I knew I would never get to talk to Dr Gray about this situation and it was only $30 we let them know that would be the last money they were ever going to get from us and changed dentists. Something to be aware of if you have ever gone to Dr Smudde many years ago. Not to mention this is an illegal billing practice! Definitely have a low opinion of how they are doing business.
