I have been here a couple times. The food has been pretty good here every time I have come to dine.
I would not suggest getting the chips and salsa because there is not much flavor offered, however, their chicken tortilla soup is delicious!
We went there yesterday and our service was terrible. We chose to sit in the bar because it was a pretty slow day overall. The bartender chose to turn her back and watch the Sochi games instead of stay attentive to the only customers she had in the bar. She didn't get our orders right, and was slow to refill because she was so attentive to the television.
I understand, the olympics are exciting, but I'm overpaying for food and you're earning a living from tips. What were her priorities?
While I won't let this experience ruin Houlhans forever, I probably won't sit in the bar again. The servers in the dining room are much more attentive.
