I came across Pennington Hardwoods while searching for the kind of wide plank floorboards that would look good in our cozy retreat in Upstate NY. The project involved about 1,000 sq. ft. of oak flooring. I contacted a number of companies throughout the Northeast and Midwest, but as soon as I spoke on the phone with Kevin Pennington, I felt confident that I’d found the right people to work with. Discussing my project with Kevin was just about the opposite experience of walking into an impersonal big-box store. Kevin’s expertise was immediately apparent, and I was also struck by how patiently and thoroughly he shared his knowledge with me when I was still just a potential customer. Through his detailed explanations, he confirmed that live-sawn oak would fit our project perfectly. He then provided a few different quotes involving various widths and average lengths of floorboard, thoughtfully recognizing that a combination of aesthetic and budgetary concerns would guide me to a final choice. When our flooring arrived, the planks looked even more stunning than the pictures I’d seen. Our six-inch-wide, solid oak floorboards are full of character, with beautiful grain patterns and knots. The average length of the boards is remarkably long. I’d been a little concerned about the micro-bevel that would necessarily come with pre-finished boards, but Pennington’s milling is so precise that you can barely make out the bevel, especially after installation. (Hat tip also to Aaron Foust at Finishing Solutions. Their sanding also helped minimize the bevel, the subtle, matte, natural-oil finish they applied is beautiful, and Aaron was as courteous and responsive as Kevin.) Our contractor was very impressed with the flooring. He said he’d never worked with solid wood floorboards that were so consistent in quality. We’re so happy with how our floors look and feel. We installed presanded ash wood flooring from Pennington in 1999. Didn't realize it was so long ago, until now. Still looks new, over 20 years later. I really appreciated the oil finish that was recommended by Pennington. It was easy to cleanup high traffic areas. Also it is impossible to describe just how perfect the wood was milled. Every measurement I predicted was perfect. Made for great lines at the limits of the wood. We are now building a new house. We have gotten back in touch with Pennington, because we want to make sure this project goes right and lasts.

I’ve purchased flooring from Kevin for multiple home projects over the last 20 years. Each time Kevin has provided helpful guidance in wood species selection. He’s also worked to ensure that I was able to pick up or receive the product in a timely manner.
