The corporatization of healthcare has reached a new low, and here is it's embodiment. We're visiting family from our of state, and my wife brought our 10 month old to the walk in clinic because he developed an ear infection overnight. She was at the clinic when the doors opened - second patient in line. The front desk lady criticized her handwriting on the check-in list, saying she couldn't read the name and didn't know how to pronounce the last name - nothing major, but the delivery was unprofessional. She then asked who was being seen and informed my wife that they do not see patients under 18 months of age. This clinic is attached to a hospital. I suppose it's within their discretion to define their scope of practice; and believe me, we wouldn't visit an urgent care setting if we had a choice. But this is just so strange to me, restricting the availability of care to one of the most vulnerable populations. But here's the kicker, and the reason I took the time to write this review. When my wife left, she was flustered and forgot her diaper bag. She visited another urgent care, which did see our son, and arrived home before she realized she didn't have the bag. She called the walk in clinic at IU Health Bedford, and they confirmed that it was there. I came to get it, and when I arrived about an hour later, the receptionist pointed at our bag on a chair in the waiting area and asked if that's what I was looking for. It was. Perhaps the hospital has a policy against taking possession of a lost bag. I don't know. But if that's the case, and a lost bag is a security concern, I would have thought that security would come to take possession of it. I'm not sure what the policy is, nor what it should be, but the impression I left with was one of complete apathy for my son, my wife, our health, and our possessions. It's hard living so far from family, but one thing I don't miss - and it's a hard choice between this and snow - IU Health and all its corporate glory.
