Left multiple voicemails with no call back. My boyfriend was actually able to get the owner on the phone once, who told us he could probably stop by the following day around 5pm to look at our water softener. Never showed up & never called back to reschedule. We ended up fixing our water softener ourselves.

I debated writing this review for a while, but decided to go ahead. Kamm installed a system for us about 10 years ago, which we bought, not rented. It was a softener and a whole-house backwashing charcoal filter. He was cordial and fast, and seemed to go a good job. I thought everything was fine, although the salt usage always did seem to be pretty high. Last year, I had another plumber in the house, and he put a flashlight up to the softener tank and showed that the level of beads in the tank was quite low. About 12" deep in a 40" tank. Then I checked the settings. The hardness was set to 30 (appropriate for the area) but the capacity was only 9000 grains. That means that it would condition 300 gallons of water. That also means that if you use more than 150 gallons in a day, it will recharge that night, because it assumes you'll use more than 150 the next day. 160 gallons per day is average for two people. This means that it would recharge nearly every night. That takes ~10 pounds of salt each time, which explains the high salt usage. It also takes quite a bit of water. I didn't measure it (yet), but reading online shows me that an Autotrol valve will take 100 gallons of water to recharge (more or less). Water here costs a penny a gallon (yes, that's expensive), so that's about $30/month in water for recharging. I refreshed the softener recently with new ion exchange beads, and now it is set to a capacity of 30,000 grains and will do it. At 160 gallons/day, it will now recharge about every six days, or about 5 times a month, which is what I'm now seeing. And indeed, in addition to much less salt being used, my water bill went down by about $25/month. It would have cost him about $100 more in beads to properly fill it (I recently bought enough to do the job properly). That's four months of my water bill. This cost me a lot of money. I didn't know at the time what to check for. Now I do. Two stars instead of one because he was prompt, cordial, replaced my old-as-the-hills gate valve, and did a decent job, except for one critical piece that ended up costing me more in water than the system cost in the first place.

After dealing with the terrible local water for nearly 4 years, we finally decided to get a water softener. Kamms was recommended highly from people in the local community, so we reached out. Our home hadn't had a water softener before, so he had to install it completely. He walked me through the process, was completely honest about the benefits of buying vs. renting and was low-pressure on making the sale. He came back in the timeline he agreed to, installed it - no surprises. A lot of places push you to buy salt from them - but he was open about using whatever we chose. I'd recommend them again.
