I have been a Nationwide customer for over 30 years. The primary reason for my continued loyalty is the level of service which I receive. I have had three major incidents where my insurance came into play, twice with homeowners insurance and once with auto insurance. In the first homeowners claim, I was out of the house for an extended period of time during an extremely heavy thunderstorm. The electricity had gone out and my battery operated backup sump and ejector pumps ran out of power due to low battery capacity because of their age. This resulted in the flooding of my finished basement ruining the carpeting. After contacting Nationwide and getting instructions on how to proceed, new carpeting of my choice was installed and the situation made whole without any quibbling over the damage and what was to be done.
In the winter, a number of years later, there were a series of snowfall days with subsequent freezing and thawing of ice on the roof. This caused a thick layer of ice to form in the gutters and under the shingles. Trying to minimize the damage, I got on a ladder, and with a hammer and chisel, spent four hours trying to clear the ice. After filing a claim, Nationwide came to the rescue and had the damage quickly repaired, which was expected. Unexpectedly, however, Nationwide also gave me a credited for the four hours of time I had spent trying to minimize the damage!
Then, a few years ago, my 4 year old XKR Jaguar was demolished by a young person driving over the multiple yellow lines which are used to narrow the roadway in order to make a turn lane farther up the highway. As he sped over the yellow lines to get to the left turn signal before it changed to red, I pulled out of the side street onto the main thoroughfare. I was hit just in front of the driver's door completely destroying the front end of the vehicle. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries involved. After filing a claim, I was contacted by phone and e-mail several times by Nationwide representatives to determine if I had recently made any upgrades or put new options on the car which could add to its value. Although this vehicle could not be repaired nor an exact replacement found, Nationwide obtained a valuation for the car which I felt was fair. Additionally, Abe was able to review the auto policy on my new vehicle and reduce my yearly payments by several hundred dollars.
The bottom line is that in times of stress due to accidents, you don't want to have any added pressure due to squabbles with your insurer concerning getting the repairs which satisfy your expectations. In my three instances noted above, Nationwide made a bad situation a little easier to bear with quick responses and mutually agreeable solutions!
