Idaho Custom Wood Products

We ordered 29 solid unfinished exterior and interior knotty pre-hung Rogue Valley Door alder doors through Idaho Custom Wood Products for our new home. The exterior pre-hung frames were delivered first, so we could get the home weathered in. Those exterior frames were made from “tight knot,” nearly clear alder lumber, with few cracks and only small holes. Based on the quality of the exterior frames, and because we had seen knotty alder Rogue Valley doors in a showroom, in the Rogue Valley Door brochure and on its website, we expected the quality of the exterior doors, interior doors and frames would be comparable. The last photo below is what is shown as a knotty alder door on the Rogue Valley Door website. That is what we expected to receive. We were sorely disappointed when the pre-hung doors were delivered to see that all the doors, and the interior frames, had numerous loose or missing knotholes, as well as large cracks and voids. Representative photos showing a few of the dozens and dozens of large holes and cracks in both the doors and the frames appear below. Because we wanted a more finished appearance, and didn’t want to catch our clothes on large exposed cracks, we spent many days filling, sanding and coloring the large holes and cracks before finishing the doors. When we expressed our concerns to Idaho Custom Wood Products, we were rudely told: “That’s what you get with knotty alder”, even though the quality of the doors and frames we received was markedly different from what we had been shown in a showroom, and what is displayed in the Rogue Valley Door brochure and on the Rogue Valley Door website. Idaho Custom Wood Products was unwilling to do anything to address our quality concerns. Idaho Custom Wood Products also mortised the hinges on the door that goes from our house to the garage backwards. We did not discover this error until after we had finished the door, and were ready to install it. Although Idaho Custom Wood Products did replace the incorrectly mortised door without additional charge, it took them 6 weeks to get it done. We then got to finish the new door before we could install it. We have two recommendations: (1) carefully check that any doors you receive from Idaho Custom Wood Products are manufactured correctly before you finish them, and (2) be warned that if you want knotty alder, you will not get what is shown in marketing materials, but what is shown in the photos below instead. If we ever need to buy doors again, we will find a more customer-friendly, and reliable vendor.
