T. S. H. on Yelp

image In early June, I met with Corey, the owner of Paramount Restoration, to review the scope of a kitchen renovation plus bedroom flooring, basement HVAC, and mold remediation. After comparing Paramount's quote with two other companies and examining its proof of license and insurance, I chose to hire Paramount for the project with a two-week timeline. A crew started the kitchen demo on June 13. This part of the project went fairly smooth, as did the mold remediation. Now, for the things that went wrong...- Delays: There were days during the contract period when no one worked on my reno project or only two guys showed up in the late afternoon. I learned that this occurred because the crew was ordered to work on other contracts instead. - Broken promises: Paramount could not honor its commitments. On too many occasions, I was told the crew will be there at X time, X work will start on X day, or X work will be finished by X day. It simply didn't happen. I attempted to keep work on track by providing Corey with updated punch lists to share with his crew. As the contracted end date approached, my patience had reached its limit. I informed Corey that if the contracted work was not completed within a week, I would cancel the contract and hire another company to complete the project. This delay also impacted my move-in date. - Amateur workmanship: This was not my first reno project. Having seen how professional home improvement contractors operate, I've seen quality workmanship. With the exception of the electrician and HVAC guy, it was clear that Paramount hires guys who are not professionally trained and lack experience in major renovations. The licensed HVAC person also served as the foreman and all-in-one laborer who also did drywall and flooring. The floor tile installer was sloppy. Mortar and grout was left on my cabinets, baseboards, and the porcelain tile. Now, I'm stuck with days of scraping and brushing to clean up the mess. - Lack of respect for my property: When the laminate flooring was installed, the crew cut boards in my closet, utility room, garage, and front sidewalk. At the end of each day, I would inspect the progress and noticed the mess left in these spaces. Then, I spent hours cleaning up after the crew on several days. One morning, I arrived at my home and found that my garage door opener (which Corey had lent to the foreman) was left in plain sight outside the garage on top of the electric meter. Although my home is in an awesome neighborhood, I found this action to be a complete security breach and plain stupid. Also, I discovered that the crew was using my tools and supplies (including a brand new drill still in the box) without my permission. The idea that someone had the audacity to go through my cabinets and toolbox was alarming. After the project ended, I found items missing. To this day, after two requests and 25 days, Corey still hasn't returned my garage door opener or reimbursed me for my missing items. To be fair, Corey did give me a credit toward the final balance. He also had a crew member paint my kitchen for free. Nonetheless, I suggest Paramount focus on mold remediation and only do minor home improvements that take a few days max. Major renovations are not the company's strength.
