Widow due to the war in Iraqi here I was told yesterday by a guard that they would take walk-ins on Thursday (since Wednesday was booked) so my fianc and I came back this morning. The guard from the previous day gave us erroneous information, however, the lady giving passes today (February 29, 2024) told us that we might be able to just bypass the appointment booking and be seen since it was slow today. She was a black lady who was extremely kind and understanding. We headed to the ID office and encountered a young black lady (whos name we were not able to retrieve) who I took the time to explain that I have an doctors appointment at 10:45am today (its currently 9:58 as Im typing this) and that they needed a military ID. She was callus and unsympathetic. She kept reiterating that I needed an appointment and the earliest appointment were a few weeks out. I went on to explain (more than I was comfortable with) to her that I had my military ID stolen (identity theft) and that I didnt want to even be on a military base because I have anxiety dealing with people I dont know. I told her I was here because in order for me to get a therapist, I first have to get a doctor, in order for the doctors office to see me, they need an military ID. Thats what I was told. I was doing my best to explain without attempting to get flustered. However, it was very apparent that my story wasnt of importance to her. Instead of her showing any type of compassion, she kept reiterating that they werent taking walk ins (mind you I wasnt the only walk in) and that I should go through deers/the website to make an appointment. However, once I became visibly upset, she proceeded to do my fingerprints (by this time I was very overwhelmed but doing my best not to cry because she was completely aloof. The fingerprint machine wasnt working properly (because others were struggling with it as well), yet, she kept talking to me as if it was my fault it wouldnt operate. She told me I would have to wait a whole hour for her coworker to come in since she couldnt do anything further for me so I exited and sat outside to cry, pray and calm myself down because I really want to unleash fury upon her. My fianc stayed inside so that I could separate myself from such an ugly display of nastiness. He saw others come in that either received the same treatment as I did OR that she took the time to notify that there fingerprint machine wasnt working properly and treated with dignity and respect. Disgraceful. Honestly its quite shameful. My fianc also informed me (once I came back inside to be seen by her coworker) that she had her car broken into and it was rained on. I understand. She was disgruntled because of her circumstance, however, I dont believe that gives ANYONE the right to treat people the way in which she was treating me and other people who had to deal with her irritation. She had the ability to treat higher ranking individuals with kindness, yet, shell treat someone like me, whose late husband gave his life for this country, with such disdain??? However, her coworker came in and was EXTREMELY nice. She was a small Asian lady. I appreciate her taking her time to actually get my situation squared away expeditiously. Moral of the story: unless youre high ranked, you may have to deal with this kind of behavior which is totally unacceptable. We ALL have bad days, it doesnt give us license to be dismissive and unkind to strangers. As a black woman whos had to deal with much racism and prejudice within the military, every time I say Im a war hero widow, people either happen to find compassion or they because even more orneryI look forward to getting remarried so I can completely abolish all situations of this nightmare of going through them for healthcare, therapy, etc This is NOT how people whove had fight for this country nor their families should EVER be treated. The end.
