Making our way from the parking lot to Turner Field during a visit to Atlanta, a friend and I were ambushed by a sudden downpour. Lacking the appropriate gear, we high-tailed it into Cafe JAS, a non-descript bar in a little, almost rundown strip mall. It was a typical older Southern bar - there were a few old arcade games, a few seats around the edges, and a wide, cheap, selection of booze. The place was built around conversation, and the bartender (perhaps JAS?, an older woman) was an interesting and amusing person. Knowing we were from up north (and also the only white people in the bar that had maybe around eight or so people), the conversation bounced from one topic to another. At one point, a man with one tooth walked up and said my friend looked like Chipper Jones (a player on the Atlanta Braves), and bought him a shot. Imagine a friendly place like Cheers, but in a different neighborhood, and you've got Cafe JAS. The bar food was hot and well made - what other type is there in the South. The booze - well you can't go wrong with 16 oz cans of PBR. After a two hour or so rain delay, we went on our way. But after a few shots (including with JAS), orders of mozzarella sticks and french fries, great conversation and a few beers, we had a bill of around only $35. On our next trip, we will definitely visit again!
