I go for lunch and always encounter the same helpful gentleman. Really seems to appreciate customers.

Sadly, Al's has closed down in Athens. Downtown Athens is a tough place to run a restaurant. Quality was never an issue in my opinion. The locals do tend to strongly favor locally-grown businesses over national chains, which technically applies in this case. Or could it be that being a Chicago, I.e. "damyankee", sandwich doomed it? Probably not. December and May are tough months economically for eateries which depend on a lot of UGA traffic, but that can't be the whole story either. The manager/owner was always a nice guy too. Sorry, man, I should have eaten more beef. This is probably the best roast beef sandwich you are likely to ever find. The dipped sandwiches can be a little messy but that's part of the charm. Fast service. Combo beef and sausage recommended. Some day I'll have to try the hot dogs, polish sausages, and tamales.
