Barbara is one of the most caring psychologists I've ever received counseling from. She would always reply to my messages or emails in a timely manner and was always willing to accommodate to my work schedule, (which was in constant flux). She is very easy to reach. It's unfortunate she doesn't accept insurance. I was a bit hesitant about seeing a therapist who didn't accept insurance because of the cost but I was able to get reimbursed by my insurance company, Cigna, through my flex spending account.

When looking for a psychologist my top priority was finding someone who was open to different lifestyles and different lived experiences. I was looking for someone who was pragmatic, yet understanding of deep visceral emotions. Barbara Uchino pairs her excellent clinical training with a sincere commitment to meeting her clients where they are. From that starting place, Barbara works with you to forge a path forward, through introspection, reflection, thought exercises, goal setting, and an unbiased evaluation of your own circumstances and motivations. Barbaras office is truly a space where you are safe to look at yourself in the preverbal mirror to see the internal and external factors that have shaped you without judgment. She asks informed questions that allow you to empathize and consider different perspectives. She is quick to point out when assumptions, expectations, and stereotypes cloud your view. Barbara is a big-picture thinker. Her goal is not simply to help her clients through whatever issue brought them to her office in the first place. She wants her clients to develop strategies for working through challenges on their own; strategies that will change the way they interact with their own emotions, with others, and with outside pressures. In addition to being a talented psychologist, Barbara is extremely flexible and understanding when it comes to appointment scheduling. She is quick to respond to messages and willing to work with you when life gets in the way. She encourages her clients to take the lead on deciding how often appointments are productive for their healing process (and budget). Although Barbara doesnt file insurance through her office, I was able to file independently with my insurance company (Blue Cross, Blue Shield) and get reimbursed once my annual deductible was met. Its tempting to filter out practitioners based on not wanting to deal with the insurance companies, but take my advice and dont let this little extra step scare you away from getting the best care possible!
