Beware. I inquired about a rental property that allowed dogs on the premises, and the owner allowed animals in their unit. When I inquired, I stated that I had a dog with a prescribed ESA letter and would be willing to pay whatever fees and rent necessary for her to stay with me because I was desperate. She called me within a couple days (the promptness is the only positive thing to say about her) and asked about "what kind of animal I had?" I responded that I had a dog. She rudely says "okay, I'll ask again, what kind of dog so you have?" When I said that my dog is a pitbull mix, she said that it was not going to work out, and that she will not rent to me because pit-bulls are a restricted breed. I told her that since my dog has a prescribed ESA letter, it is unlawful for her to discriminate against her breed. She said "i'm not discriminating. the dog will be a burden to the owner, and therefore I do not have to rent to you. Goodbye." ACTUALLY. According to the Americans with Disability Act, and the Fair Housing Act, the owner is supposed to make reasonable accommodations to renters with disabilities...I would argue that allowing a dog (again, that should not be discriminated based on breed or weight) allowed in the unit when animals are already allowed, would be a reasonable accommodation. I understand that there is a reason for restricted breeds and insurance issues and whatnot, but NOTHING about the way she handled that situation is "awesome" and she was extremely unprofessional. When I told friends who also rent from her...the "I'm not surprised" responses were telling that I dodged a bullet. It makes you question if dealing with her is worth it...
