Im never one to write a bad review about a company, but todays an exception. February 8 I started working at the W hotel in south beach as a server with a third party company called KNR Hospitality. I was supposed to have three days of orientation, the first day we were given an employee handbook which we had to study and take an exam on the last day of orientation, our uniform, a clear book bag which we had to use for work and an earpeice. Second day of orientation comes and instead of continuing with orientation like we were supposed to I was put to work already shadowing a runner & server. Third day comes and again I am shadowing a server. The first day of orientation made the company seem like they were very professional and serious about their job, but 2 weeks passed and I never took the initiation exam or even finished the orientation class. We were also told we would have 2 days off one being an ON CALL day and the reality of it all was that we were extremely understaffed and worked way over 40 hours a week without receiving any overtime. But that’s not the worst part, on February 24 an incident happened where money was stolen from my wallet in my book bag at work during my shift, I let the managers that day know and they informed me that no cameras were installed where we are supposed to keep our personal belongings so there was no way on finding out who did it. I was obviously very upset that nothing could be done and that I was working in such a dishonest environment. Later that afternoon, I sent a message out to all the managers including the head manager Kevin Crew explaining the situation (this is the message I sent) : "Good afternoon managers, some of you are aware of todays incident, money was stolen from my book bag from behind the bar where we keep all our bags during our shift. because we have no way of knowing who it was, im not sure i want to stay working with the company. its unfortunate, but i don’t think i can work with a team knowing someone is dishonest & again can so easily steal from me. tomorrow im on call, but i will be taking the day off to think about what i want to do moving forward from this incident. also, side note it’s maybe a good idea to consider giving us a SAFER place to keep our belongings ESPECIALLY since we are required to use clear book bags at work. thankyou," Kevin Crew replies apologizing for the incident and attempting to find a solution by finding me a locker. He never acknowledges the fact that I asked to not be ON CALL the following day because I needed time to think about whether I wanted to stay in the company or not, so I figured it was okay. The next day comes and sure enough I get called in for work by one of the managers and I remind her that I had stated in my message I would not be coming in that day, she notifies me that she let Kevin Crew know that but that he did not care. He then calls me on the phone and tells me again that I need to come in to work, of course I remind him about about the message I sent the day before and he tells me that it has nothing to do with the incidient so I am obligated to come in and if I don’t I would be considered abandonment of work and I would be fired. When I heard him say that I would be fired if I didn’t come in I knew I couldn’t work under this man ever again. The crazy part of it all is that they have protocol for call offs, people call off all the time (that’s why there are ON CALLS) and they never get fired, most you’ll get is a write up if you consistently call off. Also, during orientation they said protocol for call offs is two hours before your shift and I had made them aware an entire day before. Kevin Crew doesn’t deserver to be manager, he is inconsiderate and doesn’t care about his employees not even the managers that work under him, NOT ONCE did I hear anything good said about him by his fellow employees everything was always negative and for the right reasons. Help me spread the word, people like him don’t deserve to be managers.
