Jan was a great host! Don’t judge a book by its cover! Sure it’s not fancy but fits the historic town which it is located well! Good location to good food is a plus....very nice people

Clean facilities, laundry for 6 bucks, stay comes with a hot shower, what more can you ask for! 2 houses down from the avalanche brewery and a block away from the brown bear café and the bent elbow! Jan is very nice and will take you back to the trailhead for 5 bucks also!

Jan Sweet, the owner/operator, is anything but. Our party of 3 booked about 3 weeks to ski Silverton during the spring season. Unloading the car, my friend was told not to slam the door when he hadn’t even shut the door yet, he was stomping out the snow from his feet before entering. We were told via email that we’d be in the bunkhouse and then moved into a 4 bedroom (2 bunks) and wouldn’t be sharing with anyone. We showed up to someone else in the bunkroom and then had someone else a couple nights later in the 4 bedroom. We mentioned that we were under the impression we were getting the rooms to ourselves and Jan was very defensive and told us how she has the right to do what she wants and to read her website. A simple sorry but I’m booked would go a long way or even better be clear up front and tell us we may have to share with someone. The second night in the 4 bedroom we had someone show up and sleep on our floor (a 5th person) at 2am. The other person that was extra in our room tried to go to the bathroom and stepped on this person. We put together in the morning that Jan overbooked the hostel and told that person they could sleep on the floor in a room at the end. She may of meant in the bunkroom, but that wasn’t clear to this person showing up at 2am. The next morning we woke up to no toilet paper in any of the bathrooms. We texted and about 20 minutes later got toilet paper, but not a great way to start your morning when everyone wakes up at about the same time to run up to the mountain. On our 5th and ultimately last day here, I was reading in the front entrance area trying to have a relaxing day off of the mountain. I turned the chair to face the window and put myself in front of the space heater to stay comfortable, when Jan came by telling me the heater won’t heat the rest of the house if I sit in front of it and rambled on a bit as she walked into the other room. At no point was there a request or question in her rant, so I didn’t say anything. About 10 seconds later she pokes her head around the corner yelling ‘hello’? To which I asked if that’s her way of telling me to move? She told me No, and then started ranting some more and said something about how we turned up the heater. At this point I’m confused on if I’m not supposed to heat the house too much or if I’m not heating it enough. Her rant continued for a bit and she ran upstairs. My friend returned to sit next to me and about 10 minutes later Jan returned demanding we leave because I was disrespectful. To be honest I could have been more courteous, but I feel like respect goes two ways. So we ended up getting the rest of our time refunded and we left. My overall recommendation is only stay here if you have no other options and your stay is very short. There is no lounge, and Jan is not very welcoming of anyone sitting around the hostel during the day. I understand running/operating a hostel is a lot of work, but I feel like Jan is insanely burnt out and is not a very friendly person if you have any concerns.
