I was referred to Mary Southworth CPA by family. Our family used her for annual taxes for many yeras and was generally pleased with the service. Although, every year the cost of the same services increased by 10-25%. Their reasoning, "the IRS is making me complete more forms and do more work." Maybe so, but I have my doubts, more like supply and demand. Be forwarned, Mary's group will take in as many annual returns as possible and in doing so provides no back checks of returns to ensure no mistakes are made by her less experianced staff. Take in point my experiance. For the first time ever, I had a large investment payout (stands out like a sore thumb on a return), otherwise my taxes are very straight forward and simple. Mary's group left off a couple zeros on the amount of the payout and three years later I get hit hard by the IRS and State treasury. Mary's justifications, "I must have fat fingered it." If this would have been reviewed by a second set of eyes, I would be okay today because I would have just had less taxes reimbursed to me on that year. Instead, I had to come up with a large sum of cash to pay the taxes due. Sure, Mary paid the late fee and interest (less than 1% of the taxes due), but when asked to help pay some of the amount due she didn't offer to offset any of the cost of her "fat finger" mistake. Instead, Mary took a defensive stance referring to the contract we signed that basically states they are not liable for anything, even mistakes. So if you think hard about that contract, Mary's group can screw your return, collect their fee for service and pay a small percentage in late fees and interest when the IRS catches it. Zero risk for 99% gain. My conculsion, Mary Southwoth CPA has no standards or ethics. If you want to pay a lot for sub-par service that you own all the risk, Mary Southworth CPA is for you. Otherwise, take my advice, find a real CPA.
