image Let me begin by stating that i do not take writing reviews lightly (this is the first negative review I have ever written); however, I think it’s important that I share my experience with Richard Golding Construction so that customers can have an accurate picture of how he does business. Let me begin by stating the positives.
Richard Golding is a very knowledgeable contractor. He has excellent attention to detail and asks really good questions to help his clients think through the project and offers helpful suggestions and solutions to problems. He seems to have a big heart and is good with kids and patient with his workers.
Unfortunately, all of his good qualities are vastly outweighed by the poor way he runs his business. He began our bathroom project on July 10th and it is STILL not complete. His excuses have all seemed legitimate (he had an employee quit or not show up to work or a van broke down or he had another project he needed to complete first) but after 3 and a half months the project is still not done, and he will not return my calls or emails, so those excuses are no longer valid. He has one good employee out of the four that we met, so if Richard wasn’t there to manage them or communicate our needs to them, things would often be done in a sloppy way that eventually had to be redone or just done incorrectly altogether. We would tell one employee “this is the grout you need to use here” or “the outlet needs to be moved here” but then a different person would show up the next time and not have that information (or ask for it) and would do it incorrectly. This was very frustrating because it could’ve been avoided had they valued good communication or if Richard had been there to oversee. Many times we would hear “we are on our way, be there in 20” and either they would arrive 5 hours later or nobody would show up at all. Multiple times we would have the bathroom prepped and ready for them to finish and they wouldn’t call or answer phones for days or weeks and we were left without a functional bathroom (note: I was in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy at this time, so this was quite inconvenient). Richard almost always apologizes for these events but the apologies are meaningless after the same avoidable thing has happened countless times.
In closing, if Richard were to let the guys go who are unreliable and do shoddy work, stop accepting new jobs until he can finish his current job, communicate when he is going to be late or is not going to be able to make it, and just stick to his word, I would have no problem recommending him. In fact, I think he could have a very successful and reputable company. However, we have felt extremely taken advantage of over the last months and the trouble, inconvenience, and lack of basic respect we have experienced has been maddening so I would never recommend working with him.
