Worst CU health clinic experience in 35 years. Go elsewhere. Overriding theme: UNAVAILABLE. I've been in Denver 35 years and have respected and loved the people who treated me from CU. I've felt so fortunate to have a level of excellence here in Denver. But that is not the Central Park CU Sleep Lab. It was difficult to connect with the CU Sleep Lab/Central Park. Part of the issue was the pandemic. It wasn't difficult to obtain an online appointment, but the doctor is a psychiatrist, and there is no one on the team who addresses any physical issues such as obstructions in the throat during sleep, diet, general physical health conditions. (Update March 2022...only now do I see that the web page for this site indicates that they are only a lab! Was it not possible to communicate this from the beginning of operations?) At no time did anyone take my vital readings...that is a huge missing element in this practice. There was a pulse oximeter on my finger and irritating nasal canula for the home study. After insurance finally approved an in-home sleep study (good luck getting one overnight in a lab), the person to whom I returned the gear was snide about when I returned it (after all, people do have jobs). Weeks and months dragged out as things opened up. Getting a mask fitting (presumably by a professional in this clinic) is limited to Fridays, and there is never an open time. There was NEVER any clear explanation for a first-timer about how the testing/assessment worked, or any information until a CPAP was prescribed, what CPAP equipment options there are for home and travel, NOTHING about how this process worked. Not only that, there was NO information that surgical options exist! On my own, I learned that there are surgery options, that one can request a physician (otolaryngologist) to determine if there is a physical obstruction (NO ONE at a UNIVERSITY clinic even mentioned this!), or other assessments about diet, or physical factors. In effect, the psychiatrist interview was to determine depression (yes, from lack of sleep!), or other sleep hygiene factors such as bedroom temp and related conditions. From the staffing interactions I did have (97 percent online or email), I never had questions about how I felt, how my sleep condition was, how to measure sleep, or any general well being questions. In practice, there was no care. This clinic just scratched the surface, and in no way represents a university practice. The clinic manager at Central Park, while friendly and honest, has no experience in sleep studies, apnea treatment, or any related practices. No research, no multi-disciplinary approach to health (good luck getting any questions answered), and overall, avoidance of phone calls. Email predominates, and it appears that the clinic is understaffed, over scheduled, and in general, underqualified. After more than 6 months of patience (people had to get through the pandemic), I got a copy of the prescription and left as fast as possible for a more qualified clinic. The sleep clinic was a resounding failure, and the response the CU Anschutz patient advocate was disrespectful. It's as if this clinic is the neglected child of the medical practice. That is very unfortunate given all the sleep issues people have these days, and the potential of this practice.
