Amazing!
I usually find tailors to be very slow and inflexible; the women at Xin Ye Fang were the antithesis of traditional tailors.
It’s a Sunday, I‘m leaving on a trip tomorrow and I needed a pair of pants hemmed ASAP. Not only are most of the tailors in the city closed, but the ones that are open are charging outrageous prices and asking for days, if not a week turnaround time. I walked into Xin Ye Fang and I timidly asked if I could get pants hemmed today, expecting a backlash, the woman who greeted me acted annoyed, waved her hand, nodded, and said, “today.” I translated her expression and gestures to mean, “of course they’ll be done today, what kind of shop do you think we’re running here?”
Her colleague chimed in:
Her: “When do you want them?”
Me: “What time works best for you?”
Her: “Now”
Having never been quoted a timeframe like this, I didn’t really know what to expect, but as soon as I tried on my pants, the Xin Ye Fang assembly line kicked into action and I truly understood what “Now” meant. One woman pinned my pants, the next said, “6 dollars”, as she used a giant pair of shears to chop the excess fabric, I nodded my head, bewildered, and turned around to visit the ATM across the street. I was gone for about 4 minutes... when I returned, clouds of steam were rising from my newly hemmed and pressed pants, I deduced that a third woman sitting at a nearby sewing machine had worked her magic in my absence. I was in the store less than 30 seconds before a 4th woman, done pressing, handed me the finished product and abruptly turned to work on the next customer’s order.
Suffice to say, I will never go to any other tailor as long as I live in San Francisco.
