Decided to come here for my birthday dinner because I had always loved this place - good sushi, cheap drinks and an atmosphere casual enough to ensure we wouldn't get kicked out for drunken behavior. Terrible, terrible mistake. It was a great time with good company until the end of the night, when we had to deal with the payment. Our waitress's name was Romina. During the dinner, people asked if they could be put on separate checks, and she claimed she was reluctant to do so because it was a complicated process and could easily turn into a problem. Although inconvenient for our party, I understood where she was coming from and didn't hold that against her. However, as people started to leave at different times, I noticed that they were, in fact, paying for their own items on separate checks. I didn't think to say anything to Romina, figuring that she had found a way to make it work. Imagine my surprise at the end of the night when we were handed our final receipt with a grand total of $295.70 - an entire $159.92 over what we owed (yes, I eventually did the math.) Were we (my remaining friends and I) a little tipsy? Drunk? Yes (they were tipsy, I was drunk). But trust me when I say the bill definitely sobered us up, and quick. Had the error been a significantly less amount (say, anything up to $20), it might have gone unnoticed - or more likely, noticed but uncared about due to the alcohol in our systems. But $159? Give us some credit. Looking over the receipt, we realized the biggest mistake: several items (thirteen, to be exact) that people had already paid for prior to leaving the restaurant had been left on. I immediately started texting the friends who had already left, asking them to verify what they had ordered and for copies of their receipts in order to have some kind of proof for the waitress. A couple of them were able to get back to me right away, and we waved Romina down so that we could inform her about the error. However, she told us we were incorrect and kept talking about the 18% gratuity that nobody was paying. (Earlier, my best friend had told her not to worry about the gratuity and that she would pay for it all herself.) We tried telling her that we had receipts for proof, but she refused to acknowledge them and blamed the problem on us, insisting that she knew that something like this would happen and it was exactly why she didn't want to even try splitting checks in the first place. Anytime one of us opened our mouths to try to explain what exactly was going on, she would cut us off, claiming she was already getting in trouble for going over her shift and that we were the last table she needed to take care of. Here's my problem with that - if she KNEW there was going to be a problem doing it that way, why did she give in later? She could have refused to do so or, at the very least, ask my friends and I to deal with the payment in another way. Also, up until that point, I had liked her: she was friendly and doing her best to be attentive to our extremely large group. But after she was aware there was a problem with our receipt, her tone and attitude towards us changed completely - she became extremely rude and uncooperative. Had she made any kind of visible effort to try to clear up the situation, I would've been sympathetic and understanding. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. At this point, we asked if there was anybody else who could take care of the issue for her, since she was "getting into trouble by staying," but she claimed that only she could take care of it, since it was her table. Frustrated, I decided I couldn't take being in there anymore and whipped out my card. My roommate and I ended up splitting the bill on our cards before finally leaving that godforsaken place in anger. Way to ruin a birthday!
