Beacon has been fantastic. I didn't know it practically takes a college course to figure out how to pay for the tykes college. Would have screwed this up magnificent if I had to do it alone. Nancy and Niki are amazeballs and have come through again and again. Highly responsive, very knowledgeable, and just great people to know. Take a hard look at them if you have college to pay for..

There are certain areas of life that are filled with pitfalls and unseen complexities- but those who master the arena succeed. Financial aid for education is one of those areas, and Beacon College Funding are true masters. When my kids were attending a private high school, I couldnt understand why we werent getting discounts on tuition, while other parents earning far more did. These folks saw the problem, diagnosed a solution, and we saved literally tens of thousands of dollars the last couple of years. When my kids went on to college, this outfit was outstanding again. Couldnt recommend them more

I made my own appointment when I found myself constantly seeking advice from a fellow mom and Beacon devotee who seemed to have all of the answers about college financial aid. Beacon is worth their weight in gold. I still can't believe how much information, expertise, and wisdom Nancy and Niki were able to pack into an hour-plus meeting. I usually find financial planning nerve-wracking but I thoroughly enjoyed the time and went home with a reassured mind and a plan. They asked all of the right questions and I really felt they "got" my son, what he needs in a college, and how to make that happen financially. He is now parsing his acceptance offers with confidence and will be meeting with Beacon next week to develop his own person strategy for accountability and success at his top-choice school. I wish I'd known about them years ago... it would have saved me a few mistakes and a lot of worry.

First of all, she sends out a flyer to local high schools for a "FREE College Funding Workshop" with NO identifying information as to who she is- not even a return address. This should be your first hint. I suspected it would be a heavy sales job and really went to hear any information I hadn't yet learned on my own. It's presented in a way with a few scare tactics (eg: if you make a mistake on your FAFSA/Profile, you'll be forever penalized) but even that was okay. She offers a free consult in her office after you've attended her evening presentation. I took her up on it, again, assuming that she would have a heavy sell. I figured that at the very worst I'd waste a couple of hours and at the best I'd get more information about a daunting subject of college finances and perhaps contract with her to help us. She very skillfully avoided answering my prepared questions, saying, "Before we get to your questions, let me ask you some questions". She went through my financials, implied that she would be able to "reallocate some assets" and showed me some printouts of what aid I would get if I went on my own and then a better scenario if I went with her. We never got to my questions. Then, out came the contract which offered her services for somewhere around $3000 - 4000. I was not prepared for that amount at all. I'd done some research on consultants and that was higher than what I'd seen. I told her I would need to think about it. She (and her assistant who attended the entire meeting) agreed to call me back in one week. Never heard from them again. I don't think I would have used her anyway, but that certainly clinched the deal. Hmm. Wonder if that first and only review was by a close friend or relative.
