In December, I called the store to notify them of the problem and ask if I could return the cartridge for repair or replacement. One employee responded that their warranty lasts only 60 days, and another — named Leo — told me it lasts 30 days. Leo said my problem might stem from dirt accumulating around my printer's toner fuser. I tested his claim by printing several sheets and freezing the printer before the sheet reached the fuser. In all cases, when I pulled the sheet out, gray stripes and smudges still appeared — showing that the problem stemmed from the Cartridge World cartridge, which was leaking toner. Yet Leo told me: "My owner says we can't do anything."
I called the owner, Ed Belton, to explain my situation. He said, "I'm a businessman… I own six Cartridge World stores." He complained that some customers take advantage of him by using their cartridge nearly up, then claiming it's defective and requesting a filled-up replacement. I explained that I use my LaserJet printer very lightly, perhaps printing one sheet per day on average. To prove my point, I brought my cartridge into the store and asked Leo to weigh it and compare it with a filled-up 98A cartridge. When he did, my cartridge weighed 30 grams (one ounce) less than the filled-up 98A. I called Ed Belton twice more and left polite messages on his answering machine — but he never responded.
I went through a similar ordeal with Cartridge World five years ago — which they resolved satisfactorily. In November 2010, I bought an HP 98A cartridge from this Pleasant Hill store for $64. It soon yielded smudgy vertical striping down each printed sheet. I spoke to the store personnel, who told me their products had a 100% guarantee, so they would replace any defective product. In January 2011 — over 60 days after I had bought the defective cartridge — Alex replaced it with a newly refilled one, which gave me years of good performance until it ran out of toner.
The 67% failure rate (with leaking toner) I experienced with HP toner cartridges bought from Cartridge World indicates shoddy manufacturing — probably a failure to properly seal the cartridges after refilling them with toner. Worse still, the new owner has jacked up the price of his shoddy products, and refuses to stand behind them with a reasonable warranty.
