Scandalous and outrageous. In a really despicable move, the owners just gave 90 days notice to their fragile elder residents that they will cease operations. Pulling the rug out from under people who depend on them, they're turning the business almost overnight into an apartment building "community,"cancelling all senior enrichment activities, transportation, meals and 24 hour security. The lovely dining room/restaurant will be turned exclusively to the use of private events. Residents can continue to live there, but everything that made it a community will suddenly vanish. And for the majority of residents who actually need to live in a community, they have less than three months to find an affordable option somewhere else.  DON'T PATRONIZE EVENTS HELD IN THE TERRACE ROOM. They'll overcharge you, while leaving their elderly residents to fend for themselves.

I am a social worker in the East Bay and I have had several clients living at The Lake Merritt. I can't recommend it high enough- it's probably my favorite independent living in the Bay Area. Beautiful Art Deco building, wonderful staff, delicious food, engaging activities, I could go on and on. I will be moving here someday!

My Mother lived here for four years. She was excited to go there.  She thought it was luxurious.  In her words, "it was a really good place to be".  This is a one-of-a kind gem.  The dining room is beautiful.  The people who work there are wonderful. It has a really good feeling, which was the most important thing to both my mother and me.  I live nearby, and visited often.  I always wanted to go there and loved the experience of being there.  My 32 year old son wished he had an apartment like that!  He visited often.  It is simply a place where you want to be.  When my mother needed more care, and COVID-19 disrupted our lives, they could not have been more accommodating.  So, from the day she moved in until the day she moved out, we have nothing but wonderful feelings about her experience there.   It is special.  It is different.  I have recommended it to many friends.
